Which one of the these 16″ kid’s bikes would be best for my 5 yr old? Trek or Schwinn?

Dinosaur asked:

My son loves to act like Lightning McQueen as in the Disney Pixar movie meaning he loves to go quick and make skid marks.

I forgot to add this one. It's a revolutionary way to help kid's off of training wheels.

  1. They are all good 16″ bikes. I selected several good bikes, like you have, then let my kids choose between them.

  2. They all seem good. I’d pick the lightest one. It’d be the easiest to handle and ride.

  3. The first bike I bought my son was a 12″ Trek it cost me about $100 and I bought it at the bike shop I frequent most. He grew out of it pretty quickly and it was still in excellent shape. He is an only child so we had no one to pass it on to.
We ended sending to my wife’s cousin for her kids. The 16″ bike I got him was $79.00 Schwinn from Toys-R-Us. He is going to be nine and has almost outgrown the bike. It is holding up fine: we maintain it together. Mostly all it has needed has been air and lubricating the chain. He may not be as rough on a bike as most kids but if you make sure it is maintained it should be fine. Just make sure th chain is lubed, the brakes are good, and the handlebar and seats are tight. You have to replace a handgrip someday.

I’m not an advocate of department store bikes, especially if you don’t know anything about bike maintenance, but in our case it made sense. Once we picked out his new bike; he picked out his new helmet, gloves and alligator horn. The total package came to just over $100.00

    Just another perspective
