Need some help on the 2008 model trek 1.2?

trek frame
GAFT asked:

Now i need a good entry level road bike that I can also upgrade on for years to come, because i don't have the money for some amazing road bike which are very expensive. So, I layed eyes on the scott speedster S60 road bike, not flat bar, and it is said to be a good, aggressive engineered bike that is worth upgrading. Now, i also was looking at the trek 1.2 and it is not aggressively engineered but it is 2 pounds lighter than the scott speedster. Does anybody know what the frame weight is of the trek 1.2??? The Scott Speedster S60 is 2.62, is that lighter or heavier??? Based on the stats-which bike should i go for for this summer???

  1. I prefer Trek since I own several including a ’08 Madone 5.8 (got it early :) !) However, I can understand your dilemma. Weights are rarely given on spec sheets for bikes… the 1.2 will weigh about the same. What you can do is this… Find a very good bike shop that carries Trek, make sure its an authorized dealer. If they are any good, they will have a scale. Have the 1.2 weighed and do the same at a Scott dealer. Now, when you get your weights, get yourself measured/fitted for both, and then take both out for a long ride (3-5 miles). If the dealer is any good, they will let you. If not, walk away and find another one that will allow you to do that. Now, make your comparisons pros/cons of each. If the bike is comfortable right out, generally that will be the one you will pick. DO NOT let the salesperson sway you, its your bike, not his or hers.

  2. Both of these are low end road bikes. The Trek has better parts. I’d take a look at bikesdirect web site. They sell a bike with Shimono 105 for about the same price. The cons are you have to put some parts on yourself. And no service from the dealer.

  3. i’ve owned the trek madone in teh past… nice bike.. really is… i’ve also seen and worked on the new aluminum treks…the 1.2.. in my opinion… not worth it…. of the two… i’d go with the scott… granted… both are very entry level and you do get a little better components with the trek… not much better though….The frame is the difference though… the frame on the 1.2 is just… well… it was not made, in my opinion, anywhere near the same level the past trek’s used to be… If you can find a 2006 or 2007 Trek 1000 or 1500, go with that…. as for 2008 models… go with the trek 1.5 or better… the 1.2 is just so… well… its just not good enough… the 2007 got teh award for best bike under $1000 but the 2008 wasn’t even ranked in the top 8. Also, price wise…. don’t pay more than $720 for either of these bikes….. you can find good deals on these two models especially the 2006 and 2007 versions… they are out there… new and used.. check ebay.. you can find some very well taken care of bikes for much less than retail.
