December 28th, 2008Can my Trek Y22 ever have rear disc brakes?
Justin B asked:
I have a '96 Trek Y-22 with front disc brakes but want to look into getting rear disc brakes installed. I already have a wheel and hub all ready to go if possible but I am having trouble finding any sort of disc adapter and am not sure if anyone has done this to a Y frame or not? Is it possible to have disc tabs welded to the rear triangle itself? What are some adapters that would work if you know of some? Thanks!

If the rear stays are steel, you shouldn’t have any problems finding a local frame builder who can weld on disk brake tabs.
If the rear triangle is aluminum, you’re not going to have much luck. There aren’t any reliable bolt-on style disk brake mounts. You’ll end up with constant alignment problems.
I would advise that you find an _experienced_ frame builder though. You don’t wan’t bubba at the local mufler shop using his 200 amp arc welder.
Essentially what you would be installing are just the threaded bosses. I think I remember Leonard Zinn showing something similar on his website. The thing to do is to find the builder and tell him what you want to do. He can get the bosses, and then you’ll have to give him your bike and the brake you want to use.
Not knowing where you live, I can’t give you any resources. The thing to do would be to go to a really good shop in your area and ask around there.
